My 5th Grade Bio

When I was 21 years old, I found a small book at my parents' house that I had written for a class project in fifth grade. On the inside front cover was a brief autobiography, which I later scanned (click image at left). I was surprised because I had no memory of writing these things. In fact, prior to finding this book I never had very good explanations for why I chose to study mechanical engineering or why I was so interested in robotics. Apparently your childhood ambitions can determine your future whether you are aware of it or not.

Canoeing the Erie Canal

I have twice now canoed 50 mile stretches of the Erie Canal with a group of my friends. We started at the Niagara River in Tonawanda, NY in 2010, and reached Brockport in two and a half days. In 2011 we started in Brockport and paddled through Rochester to Newark, NY. Kayak The Canal has a great website (and iPhone app) for those interested in navigating the Erie Canal.

Triathlons

I enjoy competing in triathlons and try to do at least one per summer. I have competed in the Clark Companies A Tri in the Buff, the Wilson Wet and Wild Triathlon, the Orchard Park Quakerman Triathlon, and the Sodus Point Triathlon.

Bot Wars

As an undergraduate I was a member of the University at Buffalo Robotics Club, and the team leader for the Bot Wars project. Every year we built a new 40 lb robot, equipped it with some violent mechanical weapon, and attempted to use it to destroy other robots. In my three years competing in Bot Wars we never won, but we had a lot of fun.
